Obverse design elements on the 1 oz Rand Refinery Gold Bar include a variety of identifying markers. The Rand Refinery name and logo are at the top of the design field, with the logo representing a melting pot from which gold is poured into casts during production. The periodic table of elements code for gold identifies the metal type alongside the purity, with a unique serial number inscribed at the bottom of the bar. These serial number codes all start with an RR followed by a six-digit numeric code.

The reverse face of the 1 oz Rand Refinery Gold Bar has a repeating design element reflective of the African continent. In this design, a mother elephant and her small calf are repeatedly shown marching in a line. While one line of the design moves right to left, the one below it moves left to right, and so on down the face of the bar. The small calf uses its trunk to hold its mothers tail so it can stay close.
