The Design

The obverse design features a portrait of a member of the Royal Family.

If you receive a coin before 2023, the coin will likely feature the design from the artist Susanna Blunt, who portrayed the former Queen Elizabeth II in an elegant but simplistic effigy. 2023 and years after, the coin will feature the effigy of King Charles III’s, designed by Steven Rosati. By purchasing a Random Gold Maple, you may receive either design by the Canadian mint as well as potentially any design for the Canadian Gold Maple. Which design you receive along with portrait designer will be determined by currently available inventory at the time of purchase.

The reverse depicts a Canadian national symbol: the sugar maple leaf. The English and French inscriptions on the outer rim refer to the coin’s origin, metal content, purity, and weight: “CANADA,” “999,” “FINE GOLD,” “1 OZ,” and “OR PUR.”

Gold Maple Leaf Coins embody Canada’s proud heritage while showcasing its highly advanced minting technology. As some of the longest-running gold bullion coins in the world, they are recognized for incorporating modern security measures that safeguard their authenticity and integrity.

Each year, the Royal Canadian Mint strikes Gold Maple Leafs in varied sizes, adding to the traditional one-ounce sample, crafted from 99.99% pure gold and offered in a range of finishes.

Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins debuted in 1979. The series currently features a total six weights that include 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/20 oz, and 1 Gram gold coins. For the first four issues of the coin from 1979 to 1982, the series featured only a 1 oz gold coin with .999 gold purity. It wasn’t until 1982 that additional weights were added, and over the next 32 years, additional options would be added for investors.

The obverse of a 2026 showcases the official effigy of King Charles III, a left-facing portrait by Steven Rosati, framed by the inscriptions “CHARLES III,” “50 DOLLARS,” and the coin’s year of issue.

On the reverse, Walter Ott’s iconic sugar maple leaf takes center stage, accompanied by inscriptions in both English and French noting the coin’s nation, weight, purity, and gold content: “CANADA,” “9999,” “FINE GOLD,” “1 OZ,” and “OR PUR.”

Both sides feature finely engraved radial lines for added security. A smaller maple leaf sits at the lower right of the reverse, bearing a micro-engraved two-digit year mark as an anti-counterfeiting detail.

RCM Bullion DNA

The Bullion DNA is an exclusive anti-counterfeiting technology. DNA stands for Digital Non-Destructive Activation at the Royal Canadian Mint. Each coin receives an encrypted string of codes during the registration process, which is stored in the RCM’s database and can only be read through a specialized scanner.
