10 oz. Highlands Mint Buffalo Silver Bar

Known simply as the bison, American buffalo, or buffalo, the American bison used to roam a region of North America known as the great bison belt. By 9000 BCE, it is believed the buffalo were roaming vast stretches of grassland from Alaska and Canada in the far north to the Gulf of Mexico. By the 18^th century, the buffalo is believed to have reached a peak in population around 60 million. However, beginning in the 18^th century it was heavily targeted for hunting and poaching. Its habitat was significantly reduced as well with the last sightings along the Eastern Seaboard of the United States coming in 1750 with reports of buffalo near the Catawba River in North Carolina.

The obverse side of the 10 oz HM Buffalo Silver Bars includes a depiction of the American bison in right-profile relief. The bison is depicted in this design in its natural habitat. It is shown standing amidst grasslands with rolling hills featured in the distant background. There are two known subspecies of the bison. The plains bison has a larger range and is smaller in size with a rounded hump. The wood bison is the larger of the species and has a taller, squared hump.

On the reverse face of 10 oz HM Buffalo Silver Bars, you will find a repeating design element. This side of the silver bar comes with the inscription “10 Ounce .999 Pure Silver. This phrasing is repeated across the surface of the bar at an angle with a dot separating each distinct phrase.
